After he finished school with Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia, George Agnew Reid returned to Canada where he became a pre-eminent painter with many commissions and works in major museums. The drawing below was perhaps reflective of his time as Eakins' model.
The Visit of the Clockmaker (below) is considered Mr. Reid's masterpiece, and it won the Gold Medal at the Columbian World Exposition at Chicago in 1893. Simply beautiful!
Wonderful use of color, light and perspective.
ReplyDeleteI have been fortunate over the years to see several of his important works, including this one before they sold. I wish I could have purchased this one, it quite simply is a masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteI hope it went to a museum where many can enjoy it.
DeleteRight here at the Art Gallery of Ontario where they have a collection of his works. Paintings, drawings and photography. There are still quite a few that are still in the hands of private collectors that have yet to donate them for display.
ReplyDeleteGood to know most of his work is avalable to the public.
