This is Italian silent film actor Bartolomeo Pagano, better known as Maciste. He legally changed his name after the runaway success of his second film in which he played a character of that single name. Somewhat to my surprise, he doesn't seem to have had a career as a stongman prior to becoming an actor. He apparently just happened to have been built like one. Lucky guy.
