Plate 307
Muybridge did a considerabe number of photos of men throwing and heaving variou items.
This young man, probably a student, is a personal favorite of the type.
Yes U Penn. His main male models were fellow professors (as in the cricket pitcher, ) and athletic students (as in the baseball pics,) a few professionals like the pouched blacksmiths, and his well-hung mulatto boxer.
This guy was a U Penn athletic student, wonder what his parents/fellow professionals thought of his nudity later in life? Did he ever live it down? Was it never an issue?
It doesn't seem to have been an issue. One of the nude athlete model's brother had a sculpture of him made using a Mubridge photo for the sculptor to work from
Surprisingly enlightened days. I may have mentioned. When I visited the Muybridge archive at The University of Kingston in London. One of the archivists mentioned a Muybridge anniversary. It could have been the 1933 Chicago World Fair? Where some of the models were present.
It was a mixed bag in terms of enlightenment. Both Eakins and Muybridge got resistance from their respective academic governing boards. Eankins was forced to resign from the Pennsylvania Academy for allowing female students to view nude male models. Muybridge faced opposition and threats to cut off his funding, but he managed to complete his animal movement project. It was the artists and the students/models who were enlightened, as usual.
Jerry, where did Muybridge do his work? Did he have a studio? This looks like it was taken outside. Outside his studio, maybe?
ReplyDeleteHe used an outdoor set with the backdrop that we see so often. It was on or near the U. of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. He knew Eakins, btw.
DeleteYes U Penn.

Hi women were Philly prostitues, that preferred getting naked for cash, to getting poked....
DeleteI never heard about the prostitutes before, but it makes sense.
DeleteSuch male beauty. Breath taking...
ReplyDeleteHe was one of the University of Pennsylvania student athletes.
DeleteThis is model 30, Thomas Love Latta. He was an undergraduate at Penn and a star on the Penn baseball team at the time he modeled for Muybridge.
ReplyDeleteI thought that might be him. Thanks.
DeleteSo did I. Wonderful, it is him. Died in 1961!
