Fire Island

The last time I did a Fire Island series, it was all PaJaMa photos.  This time I'm branching out.
We start with a lovely color shot of The Hot House from 1958.

  1. Wonderful colors. Such a contrast from those other black and white shots. These really pop.

  2. Do you suppose that they actually fooled with ea. other? I'm serious, the 50s were so conservative.....i KNOW that all changed by the mid-70's!

    1. Most definitely. Men have been doing with each other since the Neolithic, and probably earlier than that.

    2. Definitely. So much was going on then and for all human history. There are some great books to read about. Lots of the 50s was very conservative on the surface but there was so much going on openly in places like Fire island but also under the surface. A weird example is the lyrics to Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley. Number one hit on the charts in the late 50’s. It’s all about the men dancing together and finding male partners and even mentions a purple gang. Of course he sang way more songs about girls and cars.

  3. The fifties gave us the beatniks, the rocket bra, the novel Lolita, beefcake magazines and the Mattachine Society.
A healthy dose of liberalism percolated under America’s conservative facade.
And the New Frontier of the 1960s was just around the corner….:)

    1. I think the anti-Vietnam War movement had a big impact on the gay rights agenda. Making noise became acceptable.

    1. Yes. Some local historians have a collection of Fire Island photos, and they did a pretty good job with it.
