George Lapausky by Al Urban

It was 1946 when Al Urban took this photo of George Lapausky.  Mr. Urban had a habit of publishing photos as much as a decade old and implying that they were current without actually saying so.  In this case, a reputably curated website has somehow confirmed the date.

  2. Lapausky came in 6th at the Mr America contest in 1940. He was also a participant in one of the very first modern era physique contests, Finest Physique Contest, created by Johnny Hordines and held in a gym in Schenectady NY in 1938.
The physique contestants were lit on a revolving stage with three 250 watt lights on one side, a single 250 watt light on the opposite side and a 100 watt light above.
According to Mr Hordines, muscles and the physique show up better when there is more light on one side as this creates proper shadowing, and prevents a glaring, white figure. According to one of the contestants, that stage became very warm !
To go back to that classic era….:)
