Eakins did a number of series of photos in panels showing the same model in a number of different poses.  While they resemble the motion studies of Muybridge (who worked in Philadelphia 

at about the same time,) they served as substitutes for live models for Eakins' students.  

This one of an African-American model is my personal favorite.
