Playgirl in the 70s
Today I'm posting a double set of Playgirl's 1970s men. We start
with a classic of Bill Davidson holding a champagne flute.
Remember the market they were officially pitching to, though. "Pretentious and arty" translated as "romantic and cutting edge" to the liberated woman. Of course it didn't take long before everyone knew the magazine was immensely popular with gay men whose own publications were pretty crass at the time.
I seem to remember there was a UK version of Playgirl. This was when full frontal males were rare and generally only available from licensed "sex shops". I saw a few of these as a teenager, my first exposure to contemporary male nudes and to circumcised men. I always wished they had shorter hair and a few uncut guys would be nice....
As I have said on this blog many times before, Playgirl confirmed to me in the late 1970s what I always knew. This teenage boy wasn’t worried about “pretentious and arty”, he was busy enjoying the naked men!
Never was a fan of Playgirl...too pretentious and "arty." Some of the males were pretty damned handsome, though.

DeletePlaygirl did a UK version in the early 90's and again in 2011, but there were probably imported US copies sold outside those times.

ReplyDeleteI was in graduate school at the time and enjoyed Playgirl tremendously.
DeleteThis is from March 19797, the first issue I ever mustered up the courage to buy! I was 15...!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the date.
