Let's play!
Yes, let's all play hide the soap. I'm sure bending over was involved.

Bathing was very much less of a private activity in the past but even so, these advertisements were apparently encouraged right from the very top - probably today to be regarded as a psy-op - in order to get the men under arms used to mutual nudity, when there was little privacy on board ship (as elsewhere). Most would have eventually overcome their modesty out of necessity, but it was thought they needed encouragement. I would hazard a guess that the same thing would be needed today, as the young male seems even more bashful than in the past.
A gentle suggestion that you fix the typo: "experiences during the war" not "experience during the way" - Thank you for your always interesting blog.

ReplyDeleteYoung males are indeed more bashful today, in no small part due to "helicopter" parents who think group nudity sets them up for sexual abuse.
