A last favorite
Closing out Navy Day with an old favorite from my tumblr days.
Sexual overtones aside, this is one of the most interesting posts you have ever posted, Jerry. We have to remember that, at the time these pictures were taken, no implicit sexuality was assumed. Naked men with their arms on each other's shoulders usually just meant friendship. Oh, I know homosexuals were there, as ever. But I suspect heteros were more confident in themselves and were not paranoid about casual physical contact.
Sorry I missed this comment yesterday, B.D. I agree with you and would only add that those homosexuals who were always there faced terrible repucussions if found out. I have mug shots of U.S. Navy men who were sentenced to as much as 15 years at hard labor for sodomy in the early 20th C. Oh, and the ship in the background is a World War I era type of the New York Class.

DeleteFabulous, fascinating series. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteIt was my pleasure, Julian!
DeleteThis was a great set. Brought back fond memories of the rivalry between us airmen and the pelican rapers.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the series!
