Coal Town
This item from the LIFE Archive is a repeat post and a personal favorite.
It is by Francis Miller and was made at a coal mine in Du Quion, Illinois in 1950.
Many thanks once again to Larry K. for sending me today's photos!
My Dad and several of my uncles worked in the coal mines here, and I have been in the shower rooms a number of times. I never thought to take pictures, though. Darn!
I'm not sure myself. They were certainly comfortable being stripped around one another and any other males who might wander in. But...nobody had a camera. And they were not even too receptive to females cleaning the shower and changing rooms...even though it was done when they were not even there.
I read that the Photographers for LIFE Magazine usually had the agreement of the Men they Photgraphed Nude in advance. Anyone that did not agree was not photographed. I can not say if that Rule was always followed with no exceptions but generally they asked in advance. Most of the time the Men wanted to be photgraphed. Maybe it was peer pressure or considered to be a honor.?

ReplyDeleteI've always wondered how these guys reacted when someone showed up with a camera.

DeleteWell, they were told that full frontal nudity would not be published, and that was true as far as the magazine went. As for later, not so much.
DeleteOh you mean after the LIFE Archive became available by the Internet.?
