Classical size package

The Labors of Hercules is the subject of this mosaic from a Madrid museum.
It clearly shows how the immortals' packages were small across Classical art forms.

  1. Are there any theories, scholarly or otherwise, regarding that?

    1. I've read that the ancient Greeks considered small ones to be indicative of restraint, civility, and self control. That seems almost laughable when one considers the sexual exploits of some of their gods and demigods.

    2. Self-restraint also explains the kynodesme among athletes.

  2. I have read that large genitalia was considered vulgar...

    1. Also retracting the foreskin. As if one is not truly nude unless the head is exposed.

    2. Thanks, David. We left out that part.

    3. Plains Indians actually felt the same way about retracting the foreskin (during sweat lodges and such), even tying it forward like Greek athletes did. Kind of interesting how unrelated cultures come up with the same ideas.

    4. Yes, the Plains Indians do have an overlapping custom in that regard. I took a class that was an antropological look at tribal arts and crafts and found out that Navajo silver jewerly strongly resembles that of Tibet. There are even dishonest people selling the less expensive Tibetan as Navajo.
