Wine makers
Our last Classical mosaic features two guys stomping grapes. I love the way they
are holding hands and how we can even see the splashes. Oh, and the guy at right
seems to have had a wardrobe malfunction of some sort.
Grape crushing was traditionally done by naked males. In France, it might still be so. I've seen photographs in the 70s showing naked men getting into the vat to stomp the grapes. I do no know if it is still done that way.
I have a fondness for Greco-Roman statues -- including Renaissance artists who mimicked their subjects and style. Today's mosaics are really cool! Thanks for posting!

ReplyDeleteI think I have some of those 20th C. photos. Need to look them up.

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, James!
DeleteNaked men crushing grapes.....that gets my interest. If this was done in public, that would be a healthy attitude.
ReplyDeleteMy thinking is that it was just matter of fact.
