Crowded bunkroom

Lots of beef in this crowded ship's bunkroom . . . and some idiot is smoking.

  1. It was okay to smoke back then.

    1. Yes, it was, and more than a few doctors knew the danger by the point this photo was made. It wasn't until the late 40s and 50s that the cancer link was proven by research, but some figured it out much sooner. The tobacco industry suppressed the info until the Surgeon Generals Report of 1964.

    2. Long after 1964, they hired shills to spread faux-uncertainty.

  2. I think they're all at it. Chap in the top bunk and the middle bunk is handing one to the lowest bunk. Now for something more interesting. The bunks are suspended from the deck head and if you look closely, you will see they are distanced from the bulkhead. This is so they can swing with the listing of the ship rather than fling its occupant onto the deck. Just like a hammock.

    1. Thank you. That would explain why they used chains instead of posts.

  3. I fully agree with your dislike of smoking. There are such nicer things to put in one's mouth!!

    1. I know what you mean. I really like ice cream, too.

  4. I am pretty sure these guys are chiefs (E7 and above). The khaki shirt on the guy in the foreground, and the desk and bookshelves give it away. Officers were usually bunked two to a stateroom.-Dee Exx

    1. The desk is indeed indicative of some rank. This ship must have been crowded because there are four men and three bunks visible.
