I saved what I consider to be the best of today's photos for last. This is Teddy Butler,
and at first glance you're probably just noticing a handsome bear. At some point, though,
you'll see that Teddy is an amputee. The fact that it isn't the first thing to enter your mind
is probably the intent of George Dureau. Although he could be very "in your face"
with his amputee photos, the subtlety here is magical. Teddy looks quietly confident,
even matter of fact. And why not? He's nothing less than beautiful.
Incredible photo - the pose, lighting and model's expression are all just perfect. To be honest, if you hadn't mentioned the fact that he's an amputee, I may not have noticed as the entire body is so well lit. One could argue that there isn't anything missing....
ReplyDeleteAh, you get the point quite well.
DeleteThanks for posting this. Did you know George? We had mutual friends (the late Ms. Lee Grue, the poet, for one) but I never met him, alas. The Ogden museum in New Orleans has some of his works. I'm going there this weekend and I will see what they have on display-Dee Exx
ReplyDeleteNo, I never met him, although I had heard of him through one of the little men I knew and a female artist who was sadly jealous of the attention he was starting to get.
DeleteOur other mutual friend, of course, was Wally. I think they are still selling Dureau pix of Wally as fridge magnets in New Orleans.-Dee Exx
ReplyDeleteBravo! It's all I can say! The photo is great and so well executed regarding the amputee-status of the model. Thanks again, Jerry, for an exquisitely curated series.
ReplyDeleteYou're quite welcome, Bryan, and I appreciate your kind words.
