Playgirl Assortment - 1973-1980
Today we will take a look at some Playgirl men from its first decade of publication
We start with Lloyd Beardsley on a sailboat in July of 1973.
I can understand why men would like the pictures in Playgirl. I certainly don't have any dislike of women enjoying this, although a woman would be very disappointed in me after seeing these fellows.
Lloyd was one of my all-time favorites. He was in the second issue, and all they showed were his glorious pubes and the base of his shaft. I was so turned on that I could barely walk. The whole thing was shown a few months later. I think I liked the tease of the original shots better. He later became a Colt model, and I scarfed all of those shots up. Sadly, we lost him to AIDS.
I was never a fan of Playgirl, maybe because it followed the Playboy formula too closely. Some of the models were nice, but when Mandate came along in 1975 I don't think I ever looked at an issue again. One look at someone like Bruno or Kyle Hazard and there was no turning back! Lol.
To add to other similar comments. As with, I suspect, quite a few other men on here, this "type" was our first introduction to the nude male photographed. For me, they proved highly influential. I saw them aged 18 in the late 70s, often poor black and white reprints. Yup, they still do it for me..
Whatever we think about the Playgirl aesthetic, their longterm denial that a huge portion of their market was gay men, or their eventual slide into smoothness and manscaping, we can't deny their groundbreaking influence.
I worked on Fire Island in 1981 and 82 and I seem to recall Lloyd had at least one summer as a bartender at the Pavilion in the Pines. His earlier appearance in Playgirl I recall was during my awakening to being gay as a teenager. Loved the look of his face and body. Truly remarkable.

Thanks for the career details, however sad.

ReplyDeleteI sort of feel that way, too, but I kept looking at them until about 1980.
