Although sponsored by King Victor Emmanuel III and partly paid for by popular subscription, the 1935 Monument to the Fallen Soldiers of Trieste was a project that became infused with fascism. The sculptor, Attilio Selva, was a native of Trieste whose only other overt association with the fascists was when he was commissioned to sculpt The Javelin Thrower for Stadio dei Marmi.
Selva knew male anatomy well !
