The Washington Redskins football team allowed Carl Mydans into their locker room in 1938.
It looks quite primitive compared to modern facilities, but was normal for the time.
J'aimerais avoir accès aux vestiaires des sportifs pour faire des photos comme celle-ci!!!! *********************** I would like to have access to the athletes' changing rooms to take photos like this !!!!
No, professional athletes don't usually give a damn. That was certainly my experience when I was running. These facilities do look a bit primitive, though. I'll never forget the wonderful showers at my boarding school, installed in the 1920s. All open pipework built to last a thousand years in one great hall, with enormous showerheads suspended from a circular feed from the ceiling, with hot water from a gigantic oil-fired boiler. It was in the basement of a huge and very draughty old gothic Victorian edifice. On Sunday evenings with nothing else to do, we would get permission to use up the hot water to warm up and we would all lark about under fabulously hot water until it ran out. There was no false modesty.
Our shower room in High School was round with an exposed, circular pipe fitted with shower heads up where the wall met the ceiling. That water came out fast and you would feel like you were in a carwash. Also provided some memorable views. -CA jock

The perks of being a sports reporter. But seriously, athletes as a rule aren't shy at all.

ReplyDeleteGreat story! The showers at my alma mater, the University of Texas, were like this when I started there in 1969.
