Navy Day

Today is Navy Day, and we start with some recruited being oriented.
The Petty Officer says,  "These are socks, black socks, and they go on your feet."

  1. I wonder when this was taken. With all the females in the military now,I have a feeling you don't see this sort of thing anymore.

  3. I've seen a number of pictures in this series, which I think must have been some sort of official or press record because no genitals are on view. These ratings get allocated all their kit and get to sit in these little wooden pens stark naked, the question begging being why. Perhaps they then had medicals or inoculations or something similar.

    1. There might be some sort of symbolism involved, such as stripping them of all the trappings of civilian life to emphasize that the Navy owns them now.

  4. Interesting photo because of the flattop haircuts they all have. The army was notorious for giving all recruits buzz cuts, even Elvis got one. The petty officer is wearing a full day uniform and not the regular more casual wear (no tie). With all of the clothing and shoe boxes in front of them, it makes me think that this was a publicity photo for a magazine.

    1. That's exactly what I think it was, and I believe it is from the LIFE Archive.

  5. The combination of pics and comments in all of today's posts are very informative, and I found them deeply moving. They reinforce the intimacy, and how strong the emotional bonds between these guys, must have been.

RE women recruits in today's world: I fully support the involvement of women and honor their sense of service and bravery. However, I can see how mixing them in with the guys would strongly impact (in a negative way) the deep bonds those guys might otherwise develop.

    1. You make some good points. All male environments have indeed been used to discriminate, but they do have a place. Hard to define what that should be outside locker rooms and toilets, though.
