This 1843 drawing by an unknown French artist uses lighting techniques
that closely resemble some 1950s and 6os physique photography.
1843 is a tad early for electric light - the carbon arc wasn't really commercially available until the latter third of the 19th century - so I suspect that effect was achieved with mirrors.
Considering the era, this one could almost be a photo.
