Duo
We get a divergent view in this Lynes photo of an unknown pair of men.
The drama of the strong up lighting from the front with the dark shadowy (but not black, except at bottom) immediately makes this slightly “otherworldly” but not quite brooding. It feels almost void of emotion, abstract, but totally recognizable. The eye fist travels back and forth to the two bright butt and pelvis fields, and then up to the upturned neck and chin, three bright Foci. Then my eyes stop at the butt, a really strange pair of hanging soft round globes.
OK, I’ll stop now. But this was a really surreal and classical composition.
So much going on here...lighting, tan lines, the "up and down" pose of the males...I really like this shot!
ReplyDeleteYes, and the way their bodies overlap without letting us know if they are actually touching.
DeleteYeah...I had not thought of that.
DeleteTruly beautiful on some many levels.
ReplyDeletePeter
And deceptively simple at first glance.
DeleteNot an unknown pair--this is Neel Bate and Ernest Henry from 1954.

Thanks for the ID, Tom!

Oh, don't stop. I enjoy your thoughts, and I agree that the butt really made me stop in my tracks. Like you say, it's weird, but recognizable.
