Academic Art

Today we'll look at some student art that seems quite impressive to me.  It turned out that most of these artists did not become famous for this sort of work, however.  My best guess is that since male nudes were required by the Academies, the artists moved on to things they preferred in their later careers.  Some of them should have stuck with painting men . . . for more than one reason.  Jules-Eugene Lenepveu painted this young man with a staff in 1844.

  1. As ever, and as would probably expect. A big thank-you Jerry from a well known London life model for posting these. A lovely series.

  2. I second the above comment. As a figurative artist myself (and sometime life model), there's a lot to admire here from the models to the artists.

    2. Nice to hear from someone who's been on both sides of the easel, so to speak.

  4. Impossible to say how much I enjoyed life modeling: I just wish I had started sooner, and would encourage anyone to give it a try. I would advise you not to give up the day job, but what the hell?

    1. I almost started in my mid 20s, but got a much better paid permanent job. 30 years later, I finally got to model. Yes, I do wish I'd started earlier, but the modelling I do now is so rewarding.
