This unknown duo from page 33 shows a style of photography that was common in early 1940s physique work. The two are almost intertwined, yet there is a sort of stilted separation about the whole setup. They are sort of holding hands, but not in a way that says "romance." They do seem to be gazing at one another, but not in a way I would describe as warm.
The male on the left almost looks like he's thinking, "How did I get here? Who are you and why are we naked?". Two great bodies...lots of oil (AGAIN!). I appreciate your analysis Jerry.
ReplyDeleteThanks, B.D.
DeleteDelightful. It works, yet retains that slight awkwardness of two naked males posing together. With experienced models, I think this can be explained with those who normally work solo. One inhabits a space, if there is then another man in that space they, in general, need to arrange themselves to become one. Or at least form complementary or an actively antagonistic pose. I know from experience this is not easy, but can be very rewarding. However, one does get a lovely "vibe" off the other man. Warmth, smell, competing physical strength. A real celebration of the living male form.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your very interesting point of view, David! I understand the process better now.
DeleteIt is very tricky to get it right. Especially in photographic work. Body language is so important. As you can tell, I love working in a duo.
DeleteI knew you enjoyed working in pairs, but today's detailed insight was enlightening.
DeletePleasure.
