It's ironic, imo, that back then, men usually swam, worked out, a d sometimes played sports in the raw, yet for some reason, photography required that the penis and scrotum be covered. Were they concerned that females might see the photos?
You couldn't show obscene materials in the mail. While I would argue these photos can teach artists anatomy if nothing else, the government considered then obscene.
I have pictures of whole "stables" of early 20th C. Russian wrestlers where just about all of them have very short hair. I doubt they were all in the Army. Maybe it was to keep their hair from getting pulled or tangled up while grappling?
Yes, but we'll never know if it was necessary or not. I've always wondered if the fig leaves were custom fitted for the models of just whatever was on hand.

ReplyDeleteI don't think the prudery was necessarily oriented toward females, but I suppose that might have played into it.

DeleteYuganson's hair is indeed very short. I wonder if that indicates he was in the Imperial Army.

DeleteMy...what a big fig leaf he has!
ReplyDeleteYes, but we'll never know if it was necessary or not. I've always wondered if the fig leaves were custom fitted for the models of just whatever was on hand.
DeleteDuring that period, there was still a fashion for artificial foliage and flowers. Could be wrong, but guessing this is a paper or cloth one?
DeleteYes, David, I think it is likely paper or cloth, probably the former.
DeleteValik falus zahteva velik figov list. Yuganson bi moral biti v polnem sijaju.
