1908 Olympics
This is Henry Taylor and a close friend at the 1908 Olympics.
The 1908 Summer Olympics were held at Shepherd's Bush, London, and a special pool was constructed for metric rather than Imperial measurements. This very famous photograph was taken on board ship, where exactly is not clear. It could be Southampton Water or alternatively, on the Thames at Henley, Oxfordshire. Henry Taylor was not a large man and to cut down his weight even further in the water, his singlet - which he would have called a Leotard - was made out of hand-woven silk and weighed only one ounce (28 grams).
Thank you, Jerry, for these splendid images. Right up my street! Or should that be alley? As Oscar Wilde said when introducing his lover Robbie Ross to a friend, "His father is prime minister of Upper Canada... or is it Lower Canada? The British take their class system wherever they go!"

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Julian. I hoped you would have some interesting things to add, and I wasn't disappointed.
DeleteOh, wonderful. My grandfather attended the 1908 games.
