This is from an album called "Circle of Eakins."  More about that later.

  1. They look malnourished. Sign of the times?

    1. People did tend to be thinner back then, but other models of the era had more bulk. They were chosen for certain qualities, however, so they weren't truly representative of the general population.

  2. Wonderfully mysterious. Most seem to be of the "lanky" type who row.

    1. Interesting that you mention rowers. Eakins was a rower himself, and did a group of paintings of some sexy (and clothed) rowers, the Biglin brothers. Do a Google Images search and see.

    2. It was just a guess. I've seen quite a few tall rowers like this. Not quite as lean, but almost. This was at the Highgate mens pond, London. Cold water training. Thanks for the Biglin brothers suggestion.

  3. Love this. Never saw it before. Been a fan since The Swimmers.
