Muscles

The first thing that caught my eye here was the model's muscles.
Then I looked at the pose, and that left me wondering what it represents.

  1. Tantalizing pose, puts me in mind of Renaissance and Baroque representations of prophets and scribes and saints, like Diogenes or Pythagoras by Raphael, or St. John on Patmos by Nicolas Poussin... I love a teaser.

    1. Good analysis. " . . . prophets and scribes and saints."

  2. I don't really understand what this man is doing, but I would like to draw him, his position is interesting.

  3. Wow. Utterly spectacular. And all the lovely life studio props to see. Part of a freeze? A mason? An architect?

  4. He's a beauty. Despite the unusual pose, the hot works, IMHO.

  6. This is "Male Nude Study," 1869. (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Estampes.). I came across a German article which says that the artist's name is Gaudenzio Marconi (1841-85). Google's translation (extremely rough) reads "The focus is on the effectiveness and distribution of body masses and muscle parts of a sitting figure with the arms stretched out and bent directed." And it goes on in this vein. Cf: https://mediarep.org/server/api/core/bitstreams/3f50d8ae-4f26-4e97-9759-9a2532e1997b/content.
