Today we revisit one of my favorite eras, the turn of the last century. We start with
the first of three uncurated photos from a Philadelphia Museum of Art collection that
was donated in the 1980s. Other than the obvious approximate date, nothing
else was known. This has got to be one of the oddest photos ever.
If the photographer was aiming at "unique," he sure nailed it.
ReplyDeleteYes, he did!
DeleteI, too, really appreciate very early photographs of naked men, most especially the ones that show penises. It is wonderful that there were people at that time who did the photographing. It would be interesting to know whether these photos were legally allowed to be shown. All I know is that I enjoy seeing them.
ReplyDeleteMany of these were used as studies for artists who could not afford to pay live models, and as such they were legal in most of Europe. There were sometimes, but not always, legal consequences when they were commercially distributed.
DeleteI hope the exposure time wasn't too long, the model must have suffered. At the time, exposure times must have been long!
ReplyDeleteBy the time this was made exposure times had dropped to a minute or so, but it still couldn't have been comfortable.
DeleteYikes...that's wonderfully bonkers.
ReplyDeleteOver the top in a delightful way.
DeleteMost unusual! It would be interesting to see this photographers work.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't we all!!!

ReplyDeleteThat's one explanation.
