At the beginning of his career, Vince Edwards was in two low-budget films where he was fully body-shaved: MISTER UNIVERSE (1951, where he was also bleached to play a blond bodybuilder turned "Gorgeous George"-type pro wrestler) and HIAWATHA (1952, where he played the title Ojibway tribesman).
By the time he shot his supporting role in the Martn & Lewis comedy SAILOR BEWARE (1952), his pelt had grown back to its familiar status, as seen here.
However, at some point around the time of the NYC-shot MISTER UNIVERSE, Edwards had posed nude for physique photographer Alonzo Hanagan/"Lon of New York." In those photos (at least two are out there on the web) he was dark-haired and body-shaved, except for his densely-thatched pits and pubes.
At the time Edwards was BEN CASEY and Richard Chamberlain was DR. KILDARE, the media contrasted their respective "surly" and "sunny" screen personas, which supposedly even carried over to some sort of animosity between the actors.
Richard Chamberlain was a sexy, hairy doctor competitor on TV as well!
ReplyDeleteYes, and he almost made it into this series. Next time!

Looking forward to the followup!
