John Smith
We get a fine displaty of muscles in this Russ Warner photo of John Smith. Whether that was his actual name or a pseudonym, somebody lacked imagination in the selection of it.
Il est bodybuilder Mathé Claude par Jean Ferrero. Ferrero was noted for utilizing direct sunlight. Ferrero, like Warner, photographed bodybuilders en studio, out of doors and physique concours. As Warner was a physique photographer, Ferrero was more accomplished as he was involved with the Nouveau Réalisme of France and the Ecole de Nice. He was also a noted portrait photographer of famous figures and celebrités. His art gallery founded en 1954 is the oldest extant contemporary art gallery en Nice.
I came to say that I have his name as Matthey Claudet - which to me is likely to be a slightly Anglicised version of Mathé Claude. While I have some photos of a John Smith that look to be staged a similar way (one where John is posed notably with a wagon wheel), they are not the man shown here.
Is this pose a bit unusual for Warner's work?
ReplyDeleteYes, it is, and at least one reader thinks it is Matthew Claudet by Jean Ferrero.
