This is a page from an early 20th Century fitness and body development text. The model and publisher was Anton Matysek, a performing strong man who won the Strongest Man in America contest in 1922. Mr. Matysek's books still sell today and his methods remain in use.
Another gorgeous body! Holy mackerel!
ReplyDeleteReally, and to think I had never heard of this guy.

I had never heard of him, fascinating gentleman from what I have read thus far.
ReplyDeleteDid you find the fig leaf statue of him in the Baltimore Catholic Archdiocese website? If not, look it up.
DeleteIt seems many of the strongmen, bodybuilders and weightlifters were of Slavic heritage (Czech, Slovak, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Croatian) in America at that time.
ReplyDeleteI read that recruiters for employers sought out different ethnic groups for certain jobs. Irish and Italians for the textile and restaurant industries, Germans and Slavs for the mining and steel industries (supposedly for their superior strength), Scandinavians for the lumber and furniture industries and Greeks and Portuguese for the canning and fishing industries.
