The Battle of Verdun was one of the bloodiest in history with truly horrific conditions for both sides. I recently came across some photos of men who had been rotated out of the Verdun front for rest and refitting. Here we see some men enjoying a bath in what might be part of a mill pond.
It is a poignant photo to view wondering what became of these men. Verdun was brutal.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was brutal, but at least we can be relatively certain that this was made after Petain took over and insisted that the men be rotated out of the front lines regularly. Too bad that General P fell so far from greatness when it came to Vichy.
DeleteIt is wonderful the two men that seem so happy to be photographed.
ReplyDeleteSuch a different time and them coming from war.
They were probably happy just to be alive and enjoying a bath.
