  1. As ever, we have how was the fig leaf fastened. I'm going with a thread through the leaf and around the back of his scrotum.

  3. Stolzer Sohn von Königsberg.
Sandow galt zu seiner Zeit als Inbegriff männlicher Schönheit. Er wurde von den Idealen des antiken Griechenlands inspiriet. (“)

  4. A very impressive and interesting gentleman. His grave stone is different from anything I have ever seen, but quite fitting.

    1. His wife and daughter didn't even bother to put up a monument, allegedly because they got into his private papers after his death and realized he was gay or at least bisexual. The stone we see today was put up by a fan quite a few years after he died.

    2. I did not know that, but I am not surprised. At least a fan recognized his legacy and did him proud. Seeing the stone in person is impressive.

  5. A legend in the strongman era.
Many assumed he was a giant, but Sandow was only 5’5” !
He had a musical accompanist, pianist Martinus Sieveking of Holland, who was said to be his lover. (for a time they shared a NYC flat)
Postcards of Sandow and other strongmen were very popular, and the postcards were an “in the know” form of communication between influential gay men and the milieu of their gay salons.
