Lalaing Studies

I was trying to put together a double feature for tomorrow's Friday art series centered on the work of Anglo-Belgian sculptor Jacques Lalaing.  I discovered, however, that while he used dozens of nude studies of male models in his work, he only made one or two sculptures of such . . . and they aren't that exciting from the perspective of my viewers.  So, I'll just post some of the photos and find something else for the art series.  We start with an awkward pose that accentuates a key element.

  1. It's cool that these old photos have survived so that we can appreciate them. I also like the "down to earth" air of the males in the pictures.

    1. Most of these pictures are of a single unknown model, leaving me wishing we knew something, anything about him.

  2. Wow, wonderful. These are lovely Jerry. Despite the poor condition of the image Lalaing's fine model's musculature shines through. I've had a go doing this. Great for those awkward poses.

    1. Apparently, Lalaing (or his photographer as we're not certain he took these himself) was going for the overall form and not detail. I obtained these mostly from reputable museum websites known for good tech, so I'm sure the quality issues are in the source material and not the scanning/presentation.

    2. Yup I assume low light levels when originally taken, giving enough detail for use. Still so lovely, a moment captured.

  3. For me the key element is the dark full bush.
