Jim and John

Two of the three Manning Brothers (Jim, left, and John) appear in this Lyle Frisby photo.  The third brother, Joe, also did physique photo work, but did not pose frontally nude to my knowledge.  There's an old story about a photographer (Bob Mizer?) saying that the reason there were no pictures of the three brothers together was that they were never all out of jail at the same time.

  1. John looks a bit unhappy here. But then, I find it difficult to concentrate on their faces when their other assets are so magnificent. What ever happened to them?

    1. As Peter says below, John often looked unhappy. I'll may look into whatever happened with them.

    2. Perhaps John looked like this because he was experiencing a lack of blood flow to the brain at this particular moment.

    3. LOL, Randy! Must have all gone somewhere else.

    5. John was born strong. John's father was a semi-pro baseball player who was run over by a car causing injuries that ruined his career. His father was 3/4 Sioux and his mother was mostly German. His father died when John was 16. John's mother was an exceptional cook who opened a restaurant to support her kids. John did a few crazy things that kids do and ended up in a reform school. It wasn't the best life. John joined the military and became a paratrooper. He wrestled while he was in military service semi-professionally as "El Guapo". Jim, who was two years younger than John, boxed professionally until he was injured in the ring. Jim died in 1998 from an unknown cause. John died in 2004 from pulmonary problems. John fathered at least one classroom full of children, using MANY different women. Few men have sired more children than John. He liked making babies.

  2. John Manning often looks unhappy in his photos. Obvious asset aside, I find it hard to warm to him and, for what it's worth, I much prefer younger brother Jim who at least seems to be enjoying himself more in his photos.

    1. I agree, Peter. Although John was a noteworthy and prolific model in his time, he's not one of my favorites.

    2. John apparently loved modeling nude, and showing off his dick. If he wasn't nude, he was wearing his loincloth.

Like Victor said, this is his stoic look.

I really wish we had all three brothers naked together. Obviously nothing naughty, just naked.

  3. I like the size of Jim's penis the best.

  4. I find the slightly sad, slightly resentful expression of John very ... intriguing and even attractive. I hope it's not too preachy to say that people are more than their members, and a face that sincerely reflects a doubtless imperfect life experience is worth more than many a put-on smile. But don't get me wrong--Jim is very appealing too!

    1. There is something to be said for authenticity, and John probably had more that a few lessons in the school of hard knocks.

    2. It's also expected by the audience. Look at the Indians in movies. Even in cheery musicals, not a single smile.

Remember, these models are also showmen.

  5. Yeah, the fifties weren't that nifty. I wasn't around then, but my relatives who were, tell me it wasn't easy.
Jobs were plentiful, but you had to have certain skill sets or "know" someone for the better jobs. And many companies would train you, unlike today.
But the jobs didn't pay much. The minimum wage was a Dollar and many people had to live on that.
Many kids would drop out of school, more than today's kids. And though food was cheap and rents on the low side, it was still a struggle. Things like furniture, tv sets, household appliances etc. were expensive for that time. Look at old home movies of American street scenes from that time. The cars - some are new, but most are older cars, and many had to drive "clunkers". The craftsman and Victorian homes and bungalows on their final legs requiring many expensive repairs. Not to mention the paranoia of those days., somebodies out to get you or us. Go dig a bomb shelter. (more like a grave).
Yeah, it wasn't all peaches and cream or Ozzie and Harriet.
Just look at the movies - Doris Day playing a secretary, but somehow able to afford a mink coat, diamond jewelry and a convertible! or Audrey Hepburn being squired by leading men twice or three times her age!
    LUDICROUS AS HELL!
And yes, some films would slip things in like gay characters or positive minority
characters. But the same people that made those films would be quick to deny any involvement when confronted by the hypocrite reactionaries in Hollywood.
Yeah, what a time the nifty fifties weren't !

    1. A dollar in 1960 was worth $10 today.

  7. There may be a movie or TV miniseries in the story of these brothers. For some reason, my mind flashed Ryan Murphy's name.

    1. That could get interesting and could even be expanded to "Brother Acts in Physique Photography." I have read that Jim and Randy Martin almost got into a fistfight during a Kris session. The reason? A disagreement over who was going to spank whom.

    2. Brothers seem to be common for this kind of modeling. Gay porn today uses brothers as well, but it's not as much plausible deniability.
