John II . . . or is it III?

Ending the Scott of London series and British Beef Week with another photo of John Tristram, an English bodybuilder and model who moved to the USA around 1957 and found great success.
He won the coveted Mr. America title for his size class in 1962 and posed for AMG and Kris.
Scroll back and see if you think this is the guy on the first page of this series.

  1. Definitely John Tristram: same props, same posing strap worn the same way - Mr Tristram clearly dresses to the left.

    1. Two more things about being the same man: The Chin Cleft and the nipple's size and position on the chest

  2. At the risk of repeating myself, this was a wonderful post, Jerry, and a fitting end to an excellent week of British Beef. You really have done so well to find and bring all these British photographers and models to us over the last week. In tribute to the photographers, models and yourself, it will be a Sunday roast at the pub for me this weekend. British Beef of course!

    1. I'm so delighted to have inspired a truly British feast! I hope you enjoy it as much as you did this series.

  3. Well, they call Dundee the "granite city" and Tom Nicoll certainly specialized in photographing granite. I was not familiar with his work in any detail and I get the impression that he was rather provocative in his art. There is a subtle but discernible rebellious quality to his work, possibly deriving from his Scottish background despite the fact that the Conservative prime minister of the day was the grandson of a Scottish crofter and the one to follow was a Scottish aristocrat. He kicked against the staid and stuffy conformism and hypocrisy of the 1950s. No wonder he ended up in America. Yet again, our loss, your gain.

    1. There was plenty of conformism and hypocrisy on this side of the water, but I think it may have been easier to make money over here at the time.

  4. Well, that has been a very pleasurable and informative week. For reasons already given, I was less familiar with British physique photographers but I'm pleased to say that we can certainly hold our heads up high this side of the pond in respect of our bodybuilders as well as the talent of their photographers. Many thanks, Jerry, it's been fun (and we're not getting a lot of that here at the moment).

  5. If I remember correctly, John Tristram got his education here in the U.S. He taught French at UCLA.

    1. Actually, he taught French and French lit. at Los Angeles City College
from 1968 to 1985 when he died from AIDS.
There are no records of him ever being employed by UCLA.
He was a student at UCLA, that's why people get it confused.
He came to the US in the 50s and posed for many physique photographers while also pursuing a bodybuilding career
His last photos were with Jim French.

    2. Rj is correct about the UCLA connection. So sad he was lost to AIDS.
