Odd corner

The student in the right foreground has a longish, curly hairstyle that would have
been rather unusual for the time.  But then again these were artistic types.

  1. It's interesting that all-male outings naked were okay. I knew it was fine where swimming was concerned, but didn't know it applied across the board. Oh, tempores! Oh, mores!

    1. While swimming nude would have been utterly ordinary back then, I'm not sure about ground based athletics. I need to research that, but I haven't had my Cheerios yet. Maybe later.

  2. What a fascinating series. Not, perhaps, very typical of the day, but the fluidity and the energy have been wonderfully captured for posterity.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the series, Julian. Eakins and the students achieved something very special that day, and I'm not sure if they even knew it. To be captured in such a moment that people marvel at 140 years later is a form of immortality.

  3. I too want to thank you for this interesting series. I learned much about Thomas Eakins. Calorman says it well, "the fluidity and energy (of these young men) have been wonderfully captured tor posterity." In one of the Viking sagas I read that the Vikings occasionally battled in the nude. Hmmm.

  4. I had seen most of these photos individually (though I hadn't seen the tug-of-war), but putting them together as "A Day Out with Prof. Eakins" was an inspired idea. Nice series. Thanks, Jerry!
