Textbooks

These two images are of textbooks with anatomical lessons for artists.  The one above looks like early 20th Century, while the one below is from 1947's "Anatomy for Art Students."  I have to wonder if the latter one was a sly way to get around the censorship laws of the time.

  1. The lower shot definitely calls to mind the "posture" pictures from the various colleges in the 40s/50s.

  2. This is the kind of book that I always search for in libraries.

    1. I'm sure the librarians call it "the Gerald Section."

  3. I think you're probably right. There were any number of publications, some of them hilarious, with that in mind.

    1. Yes, and it was easier than meeting up with Lon Hanagan in a hotel room in Dubuque.

  4. I remember seeing that book in the library in the 70s and Xeroxing many pages to use for reference ... I do draw a lot!!!

  5. I also saw this picture in an old art anatomy book in the library. Underneath the picture in fairly small print, it said that it was taken by something like the California children's welfare department. And thanks was given to Dr. So and So who happened to be a woman..

  6. I forgot to add that this young man had nude pictures of him taken from the time he was a small child and showed him every few years as he was growing up. I suspect he was an orphan at the time and that these pictures were probably taken sometime before World War II.
