Arno Breker
This frieze called Departure for Battle is by Nazi favorite Arno Breker. It is based on a classical piece by Phidias and was widely criticized as being wooden and stilted, even by some Nazis.
Breker’s interpretation of a Parthenon frieze in Nazi aryan style. (one would think they would praise it, but then again the Nazi’s loved kitsch) Neoclassical was popular in the 1930’s as seen in Paris (Palais Japonais and Palais de Challoit) and Washington DC (Jefferson Monument, Lincoln Monument and US Supreme Court). ….:)
Yes, the trend was not limited to the Nazis. Some of Breker's work was destroyed in Allied bombings and some was melted down after the war for being too irredeemably Nazi.
I wouldn't mind having a 3D printed version in our otherwise sterile hallway at home-Dee Exx
ReplyDeleteSomebody somewhere might have done that.
DeleteI think it is an exquisite work, very clean lines. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe lines are indeed clean. I can't imagine why those Nazis didn't like it.
