Gratitude
These two Marines expressed their gratitude to the Coast Guard for the success
of the invasion of Guam. The man at right looks like one tough customer.
The role of the Coast Guard in Ww2 is very often overlooked. They accomplished much during the war, including securing Guam. Carlton Skinner was appointed the first civilian governor of the island, he had served in the Coast Guard during WW2. He was a proponent of civil rights and equality and had implemented one of the first experiments in desegregating the military while in the Coast Guard. After leaving office Carlton was a supporter of greater self rule for Pacific isles under US jurisdiction. Rex in DC
No doubt the guy on the right could roll with the punches, the type the Corps looked for in Ww2.

Yeah, just the sort they loved.
DeleteHe wouldn't take any crap.
ReplyDeleteNone whatsoever.
DeleteA seasoned bar brawler no doubt.
DeleteBut don’t be fooled by the boyish looks of the other Marine, the baby faced ones can be just as tough.

I've had the good fortune to hang out with quite a few Navy men over the years, and they often showed great respect for the Coast Guard.
