Captain Walter "Waddy" Young and the crew of his B-29 re-enacted the caricature painting
on their plane in 1944. Sadly, the entire crew was lost when their aircraft collided
with another B-29 which had been damaged by a Japanese suicide attack.
Capt. Young was a pro football player before the war.
I remember reading about this, he was trying to protect his fellow airmen in the other plane from further attack when they collided. A true gentleman to the end.
ReplyDeleteYes, his selflessness earned him a posthumous Distinguished Flying Cross.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the Sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.
