Military Day, Part 1 - Odds and ends
Today's series is a military two parter, starting with some odds and ends.
This is another of Eliot Elisofon's WWII North Africa color shower shots.
No doubt they enjoyed the chance to wash and refresh themselves. In France the Allied troops were and are our héros. :-)
The gratitude of the French people for the Americans' sacrifice for their liberation is profound, and something many of us don't realize. About eight years ago, I was visiting a friend in Paris who was a high school history teacher. He invited me along on a class trip to the American cemetery at Normandy. (I would never have been allowed to do this in the States, but the French were OK with it.) On the way, the kids were joking and having fun, but once they saw those endless lines of graves, everything changed. I told them the story of my Uncle who fought the Germans in France and was never the same afterward. Every one of those students shook my hand and thanked me for his service. One said, "Some of these soldiers were the same age as ma. Such courage and sacrifice must be remembered always."
cleanliness is next to godliness.
