That's Jackie Coey with Ed Fury in this 1953 photo made on Muscle Beach. Ed was a big part of the scene there in the early 1950s, and he won the Mr. Muscle Beach title in 1951 and 1953. I believe the photo below is from 1952 when he didn't win, but placed well enough for a trophy or two.

ReplyDeleteThe late, great and willing Ed Fury was so damn handsome and a physique photographers dream. Fury even went full frontal when it was risky.
It was said Muscle Beach was closed down by the city fathers because of lewd conduct by some of the bodybuilders. More likely Muscle Beach was closed down because the city fathers didn't want Muscle Beach and its concessions to compete with Pacific Ocean Park and its concessions, so Muscle Beach had to go. :( Great photos of great times past :)
I didn't know the City shut it down. Interesting.
