Havasu Creek
I think George Quaintance was still splitting his time between
California and Arizona when he painted Havasu Creek in 1948.
It's quite a hike to get down there from Hualapai Hilltop and back up again. He must have been quite athletic. The travertine waters (falls and creek) as shown are gorgeous. There is an etherality and sacredness about the place and the figures he painted. How I would have loved to come upon him and witness his magic!
Quaintance always had the edge on Tom of Finland with me, because Quaintance's images seemed closer to reality tinged with fantasy, instead of the other way round. OTOH, Tom's faces always gripped me with their masculine confidence.-Dee Exx
Quaintance had his own polished style and there is a very informative blog under his name. For illustrators I prefer Harry Bush and his California style….:)

ReplyDeleteSometines it's best that such magical places are hard to reach as it can help keep them from being despoiled. The man's work speaks for itself.
DeleteIt is unlikely you would "get away with" such a scene today.
ReplyDeleteTrue.
DeleteBut wouldn't it be wonderful if you could!
DeleteI've been down there twice... it's a job to walk in and out... but it's one of the most beautiful places in the world... BozB
ReplyDeleteLucky you!!!

ReplyDeleteFor whatever reason, i've never been a fan of Tom of Finland''s art. I admire very much, howver, the way he broke boundaries that held us back.

Quaintaince's style is not my favorite, either, but we have to give him credit for breaking new ground.
