It's time for another series featuring those clever fellows who found a way around the obscenity laws in the mid-1960s, Wyngate & Bevins. Their device was to falsely describe their photos as nudists, which had been declared legal in certain circumstances by a Federal appellate court. By sifting through legal documents, I've come to the conclusion that the principals of W&B were Samuel and Albert Ratner. Those legal documents show that the Ratners were fined $35,000 for sending unsolicited promotional material to men through the mail. They appealed, and the fine was suspended pending the outcome of a similar case already making its way up the legal food chain which eventually cleared them. We start todays set with (l-r) Don Davis, Bob Penn, Johnny Lamont and an unknown.

Hey, Jerry, you sent me on a bit of a journey to find out the ID of the guy on the right. I had him as Chuck Johnson, but I was wrong. It's Jefferey Hubbard.
ReplyDeleteHe posed with Bill Nolan in an AMG shoot once.
DeleteThe spelling of his first name should be Jeffery, if I follow the name plate from that shoot.
DeleteThanks.
DeleteI love this series, Jerry!
ReplyDeleteIf these were considered nudist photos, the judges weren't very bright. I've rarely seen photos of exclusively male nudists featuring such handsome young men. Furthermore, some of these models are either very well-endowed or they're starting to get erections. That's very, very rare among nudists, unless there are gay men in the group...
LOL, the judges were pretty naive if they couldn't figure out what was going on. Perhaps they were so focused on the legal aspects that they didn't bother to find out what real nudists looked like.
DeleteCan anyone help with model #2? I have some other shots from this photo session and the website I got them from named him as Ralph Smith. He does look similar to Bob Penn and I'm confused.
ReplyDeleteI generally go with whatever name(s) my sources use unless there is a glaringly obvious error. They are wrong on a regular basis, so you hunch could well be right bout No. 2.
DeleteIt's definitely Ralph Smith and not Bob Penn.
