At the beach

All of today's photos are said to have been made on a weekend visit Keith Vaughan made to a
seashore area with some of his models just before World War II began.  I'm left wondering how
this fellow and the other young men in today's photos fared in that awful conflict.

  1. I do not have absolute confirmation for this particular photograph, but it was doubtless taken on Pagham Beach, on England's south coast, 8 miles to the south of the historic (Roman) city of Chichester in the historic county of Sussex. Vaughn took a large number of photographs there in the 1930s, of his young, gay friends, leading up to WWII.

    1. My source agrees that it was Pagham on the eve of WWII. I visited Chichester once to see their somewhat odd cathedral, but ended up having more fun at a High Street shopping extravaganza organized by the city retail association. I got some great luggage there that I still use 25 years later.

  2. It's a mixture of Norman and Gothic architecture... If you were there post 1978, you will have seen the stained glass window designed by Jewish artist Marc Chagall. It illustrates all the Biblical instruments mentioned in Psalm 149 (150 by Christian counting) and is quite a marvel. I thought if Chagall had gone in, I might be able to as well and was pleasantly surprised to note that it is one of the few remaining cathedrals or churches of note in England that doesn't charge you an arm and a leg to visit.

    1. Yes, Bear and I saw the Chagall window in 1995. I also recall a separate bell tower and ceilings not quite as soaring as the typical Gothic.
