Little Joe
Like just about every other prominent photographer of his era, Richard Avedon took his turn with Little Joe Dallesanrro. "Everbody had to pay and pay," and I'm sure Mr. Avedon was no exception.
It is amazing to think he was so good and got so popular that he was memorialized in a famous song, Walk On The Wild Side. That is a funny line you quoted
He does him justice. He really did pose for a lot of people. Kind of incredible how different a time it was. Just saw some of his early photos by Bob Mizer. Back in the day saw his films with Andy Warhol and the Morrisey stuff.
Your quoting Walking on the Wild Side got me thinking about famous songs like that. Strangely Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley is all about guys dancing and being together and even mentions a purple gang. Didn’t seem to be any uproar over that. And about 10 years later you have Walk On The Wild Side and also Lola by the Kinks, which really spelled things out.
Was Dallesandro a male hooker? I've seen other pictures of him, but knew nothing about him.
ReplyDeleteWhile one might not want to call him a full time sex worker, Joe was definitely known to have taken money for sex.

Delete"A hustle here, a hustle there,
DeleteNew York City was the place where
They said, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side."
Little Joe never once gave it away
DeleteEverybody had to pay and pay
So I'd say, yeah.

ReplyDeleteA legend, that's for sure.

Popular music came a long way in a relatively short time.
