This photo has always struck me as a bit odd.  None of the naked soldiers are getting anything more than their feet in the water, and two apparently fully clothed men are paddling by on a raft.

  1. Could they be awaiting orders to jump in? It is a strange photo.

  2. It is the threat of splinters from that woodwork that worries me more than how cold they may be?

  3. I've been thinking about this photo for some days now. ๐Ÿค” What is noticeable, is that almost all boys cool their feet / hands. So I assume, that they have just come out of the sauna, and will go back in for a second round. Finnish men and sauna means the following: The sauna is properly (!) heated ๐Ÿ”ฅ. You're in a larger group of guys and stay together in the sauna for a very long time. You talk, sing, drink alcohol ๐Ÿฅƒ (probably not the soldiers), and just have fun. In between rounds you cool off a bit, either at the lake (not IN the lake), or you sit together on the veranda of the sauna outside (and keep drinking). And the best thing Finnish men do in the sauna together comes now: Fresh birch twigs with lots of leaves ๐ŸŒฟ on them are cut from the tree beforehand, these twigs are dipped in hot water, and then you hit each other all over your body with the wet twigs, until all the guys are crab red. Doesn't that sound good? ๐Ÿ™‚ So that's my guess for this photo. ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎ
