Interesting arrangement
This is an interesting arrangement. I wish I knew the story.
It seems that this photo appeared in a book called, "My Naked Soldier," a collection of photos of WWI and WWII solders, edited by Michael Stokes. The pics are just random vintage military snaps that Stokes gathered over a period of a few years. His website (michaelstokes.net) says he made an arrangement with Taschen Publishing to print the book under the title "My Buddy" in 2014, now out of print. There is another photo in that book that is extremely similar, but without any info whatsoever, and it seems to be 2 pics from the same photoshoot. In any case, it's fairly definite that it's a photo of US Soldiers, likely taken by a fellow soldier purely for patriotic reasons.

Exhausted after strenuous sports, maybe. Interesting set up, though.
