Socrates and Alcibiades

Kristian Zahrtmann did two very different takes
on the story of Socrates and Alcibiades.

  1. Zahrtmann was gay and the subject of Socrates and Alciabides (from Plato's Symposium) was much discussed in gay circles at the turn of the 20th century. Read the article Zhartmanns Symposium by Michael Hatt to get a thorough background. The model for Alciabides and Adam had most interesting relationships and life.

  3. That first monochrome one is stunning. One presumes a rather lovely model?

Zahrtmann was educated in the classic tradition at the famed Sorø Academy.
Greek language and the classic art and literature of Ancient Greece were his favorite subjects. Later in life he traveled to Greece and was a member of the Greek Society of Denmark. At that time there was an intense interest in Ancient Greece throughout Europe.

  5. Is the model on the left, on top and the same model as the male in the prodigal son?
