Perseus with the Head of Medusa


We start with what I think is a copy of Canova's 1801 marble of Perseus 
holding the head of Medusa.  That broken sword puzzles me.

    Broken from cutting the head of Medusa. The gorgons were said to have skin that was like scales of metal.

The sword may not necessarily be broken… Many statues had attachments that were not made of stone, in this case it could’ve actually been a steel blade fitted to the hilt the statue is holding… Some statues actually held wooden bows portraying shooting of arrows, or a wooden staff that was fitted into a hand sculpted for that purpose…
